Lion's mane extract: polysaccharides, ratio or both? How to read the specification

Lion's mane extract is sold as a polysaccharide standard or as a ratio extract. How to read each specification, what to ask for and how to compare offers.

Two different numbers on the same product

Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) appears in two ways on a specification sheet. Some suppliers offer a polysaccharide standard, for example 30% polysaccharides by UV. Others offer a ratio extract, for example 10:1, which means ten kilograms of fresh mushroom produce one kilogram of extract. The two numbers describe different things, so comparing them directly is a mistake.

Our range includes lion's mane supplied standardised to polysaccharides and in ratio form. Both are available for capsules and powder blends.

What the polysaccharide percentage tells you

A percentage of polysaccharides measured by UV tells the buyer how much of a defined fraction the extract contains. It does not tell you how the fraction was extracted, which solvent was used or how much of the mushroom is present in the powder. Ask for two points on every offer:

  • The method: UV, and whether the result is calculated against a reference standard.
  • The batch range: a specification that says "minimum 30%" is a commitment that every lot must meet.

What a ratio extract tells you

A ratio extract describes how much raw material went into each unit of extract. A 10:1 extract is concentrated, so a formula needs less powder to reach the same raw-material input. The ratio does not say what the extract contains, so ask for a marker or a fingerprint along with it.

Checklist before you compare offers

1. Confirm the species: Hericium erinaceus, with the Latin name on the certificate of analysis. 2. Confirm the part used: fruiting body or mycelium. Both are sold, and they are not interchangeable. 3. Confirm the method and the solvent. 4. Confirm the packaging and the minimum lot size. 5. Ask for the certificate of analysis and the specification sheet before you order a sample.

Every lot ships with a certificate of analysis. The full specification, including allergens and GMO status, is available on request.

How the choice affects the formula

Polysaccharide-standardised lion's mane is easier to label against a defined content. A ratio extract often makes sense when the formula is built on the whole mushroom. For a private label capsule, the dose per capsule and the powder fill weight matter as much as the grade. Our formula calculator estimates the fill per capsule for each format.
