Turmeric extract at 95% curcuminoids: how to specify it for capsules and tablets

How to specify turmeric extract for private label capsules and tablets: curcuminoid content by HPLC, the role of black pepper in a blend and the points to agree with your manufacturer.

Specify the marker, not just the name

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) extract is one of the most requested ingredients for private label supplements. Many offers say "turmeric extract" without saying what it contains. For a manufacturer, the useful number is the curcuminoid content, measured by HPLC. We supply turmeric root extract standardised to 95% curcuminoids, as a powder for capsules and tablets.

Write the specification in the same terms every time: the marker (curcuminoids), the method (HPLC), the minimum content, the plant part (root) and the packaging.

Why the blend matters

Curcumin is poorly soluble in water and is often combined with black pepper in a formula. Black pepper contributes piperine, a compound that is often used in such blends for technical reasons. We supply black pepper extract for the same purpose.

Two points decide the blend:

  • The ratio of turmeric to pepper extract, which must match the formula you have registered and the label you intend to use.
  • The dose per capsule, which sets the fill weight and the tablet size.

Do not state a health effect on the label that the ingredient and the wording do not support under EU rules. Keep the label wording to the authorised claims, and have a regulatory consultant review it.

The arithmetic of a 500 mg capsule

Take a turmeric extract at 95% curcuminoids and a target of 200 mg curcuminoids per capsule:

  • You need about 210 mg of the extract per capsule (200 ÷ 0.95).
  • Add the black pepper extract at the ratio of your formula.
  • Check the total fill against the capsule size before you lock the formula.

Our formula calculator estimates the fill per capsule and shows which capsule sizes fit.

Agree these points with your manufacturer

1. The marker, the method and the minimum content on the certificate of analysis, for every lot. 2. The colour and the taste of the powder, which matter for tablet appearance and for drinks. 3. The moisture limit and the storage conditions, because curcumin is light sensitive. 4. The sample test before the production run, using the final blend and the final capsule. 5. The documentation supplied with each batch: certificate of analysis, specification sheet and statements on request.
