Milk thistle is a Mediterranean thistle with white-veined leaves; its seeds are the raw material for silymarin extracts. Milk Thistle Extract is obtained from the seed of Silybum marianum.

Milk thistle extract is obtained from the seeds of Silybum marianum and standardised to silymarin, a group of flavonolignans measured as the marker compound.

80% UV or 30% HPLC?

Silymarin is commonly specified in two ways. UV spectrophotometry measures the whole group and typically gives 80%. HPLC quantifies the individual compounds and gives a lower figure, usually around 30%, for comparable material. Compare offers using the same method.

How to compare specifications

Compare offers using the same marker and the same analytical method: UV and HPLC can give different percentages for comparable material. For ratio extracts, ask for the specification sheet to check the ratio, solvent and plant part.

Quality and documentation

Every lot comes with a certificate of analysis stating the assay and method. The specification sheet and further statements (for example allergens or GMO status) are available on request, and samples can be sent with their documents before you order.

Handling and storage

Store in the original sealed packaging in a cool, dry place away from light. Reseal opened containers promptly to protect the product from moisture.
