Read the potency first
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is sold as a powder at 100,000 IU per gram. That potency is high, so a small error in weighing changes the dose a lot. Our vitamin D3 powder is supplied for tablets, capsules and dry premixes. Before you calculate anything, confirm the potency on the certificate of analysis for the lot you receive.
The calculation
Convert the target dose to IU, then to grams of powder:
- Target: 2,000 IU per daily dose
- Powder potency: 100,000 IU per gram
- Powder needed: 2,000 ÷ 100,000 = 0.02 g (20 mg) per dose
Round the weight to the balance you use, and check the result against the maximum levels set for vitamin D in food supplements in the market where you sell. Those levels vary by country, so confirm them with your regulatory adviser.
Premixes need a plan
A dose of 20 mg is hard to weigh into a large batch without a premix. Dilute the powder in a carrier, typically a dry, inert base, and make the premix in a controlled way:
1. Weigh the vitamin D3 powder in a clean area with a calibrated balance. 2. Blend it with a small part of the carrier first, then add the rest in steps. 3. Test the homogeneity of the premix before it goes into the main blend. 4. Record the lot numbers and the weights in the batch record.
Handling and storage
Vitamin D3 is sensitive to light, heat and oxygen. Keep the original sealed packaging closed until use, store it cool and dry, and protect the premix from light. Reseal opened containers promptly and use them in date order.

- The potency and the method on each certificate of analysis.
- The moisture and the storage recommendations for the lot.
- The packaging options and the minimum order.
