Anhydrous caffeine powder: handling, dosing and dust safety in the warehouse

Caffeine powder is potent and dusts easily. A practical guide to dosing accuracy, safe handling, storage and what the specification must say before the powder reaches the production line.

A small amount of powder carries a large dose

Anhydrous caffeine is one of the most potent ingredients a supplement plant handles. A few grams of powder can carry a full dose for many units, so weighing errors and cross-contamination matter more than with bulk botanicals. It also dusts easily, which affects both the people handling it and the accuracy of every batch.

Our range includes caffeine. Each lot ships with a certificate of analysis, and the handling advice on the specification should be followed before the material goes into production.

Dosing accuracy

Caffeine is dosed by weight, so the weighing system and the blending method decide the dose per unit. Three points control accuracy:

  • Pre-blending: caffeine is usually diluted in a carrier before it is filled, because a small weight of pure powder is hard to meter. Agree the pre-blend ratio with your manufacturer and record it in the batch record.
  • Weighing: use a balance calibrated for the range you need, and check it at the start of each shift.
  • Homogeneity: test the blend at several points in the mix. A dose that is right on average can still be wrong in the individual unit.

Dust and personal safety

Fine caffeine powder can irritate the eyes, nose and airways, and it is harmful if swallowed in large amounts. Handle the material in a ventilated area, with dust extraction where possible. Staff should wear the protective equipment set out in the material safety data sheet. Keep the material away from food and drink areas, and clean spills with a damp method rather than dry sweeping, which spreads dust.

Always read the safety data sheet supplied with the lot. The safety information is product-specific, and the handling rules in this article are general.

Storage

Store caffeine in a closed, labelled container in a dry, cool area, away from strong oxidisers and out of direct sunlight. Keep it locked if your site policy requires controlled access. Record the amount in and out, so stock counts can be reconciled against production.

What the specification must say

  • The assay, and the method used to measure it.
  • The particle size, because it affects dust and blending.
  • The moisture result, since a damp powder clumps in the blender.
  • The safety data sheet reference and the hazard statements.
  • The storage conditions and the shelf life.

Next step

If you plan a caffeine product, send us the dose per unit, the format and the planned volume. We reply with the specification, the safety data sheet and prices within one hour on business days. You can also demander un échantillon to test the blend on your line.
