Collagen is a family of ingredients
Collagen peptides are sold under similar names, but the material can differ widely. The source animal, the hydrolysis process and the resulting molecular weight all change the powder's solubility, taste and behaviour in a formula. Two products labelled "collagen peptides" can perform differently on the production line and in the cup, so the specification has to say more than the name.
Source and type
The specification should state the animal source, the tissue used and the collagen type. Bovine and marine sources are common, and each has its own allergen and labelling requirements. Ask for the origin and the traceability statement, and confirm that the material matches the claims you plan to make on the label.
Degree of hydrolysis and molecular weight
Hydrolysis breaks the collagen protein into smaller peptides. A more extensively hydrolysed product usually dissolves more easily and has a lower average molecular weight. The specification should give the average molecular weight, often as a range in daltons, and the method used to measure it. A single "hydrolysed" word on a label does not tell you the molecular weight, so do not compare products on that word alone.
Protein content and the basis of the figure
Collagen peptides are often sold with a stated protein content. Check whether the figure is on an as-is or a dry basis, and whether it is nitrogen-derived. Collagen has a high glycine content, and some protein methods over- or under-state the true peptide content. Ask for the method, and compare offers on the same basis.
Solubility, taste and texture
Solubility in cold water is one of the practical differences between grades. A grade that dissolves fully leaves no residue in a drink and gives a cleaner mouthfeel. Taste and odour also vary with the source and the processing, so test the powder in your final formula. A blend that tastes fine on its own can change once it sits alongside flavours or sweeteners.
Checklist before you compare offers
1. Confirm the source, the tissue and the collagen type. 2. Confirm the average molecular weight range and the method. 3. Confirm the protein content, the basis and the method. 4. Confirm the solubility and the appearance of the powder. 5. Request the certificate of analysis, the allergen statement and a sample before you order.
Next step
Tell us the source, the target protein per serving and the format you plan. We reply with the specification, documents and prices within one hour on business days. You can also Muster anfragen and test the powder in your own blend.
